    Goals / Remit

The Belgian Brain Council (BBC) is a coordinating council formed by Belgian Universities, organisations in neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, basic brain research (neuroscience), patients organisations, pharmaceutical industries and medical devices companies. It therefore represents a vast network of patients, doctors and scientists. These stakeholders make it eminently suited to work in close partnership with the Belgian Federal government, the members of the Parliament and the Belgian MEPs. The BBC was founded in 2005 and has office in Brussels. BBC is also active as liaison between European Brain Council and the other National Brain Councils.

    Main EU files targeted

The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the role of the European Commission in health policy both at European and Member State level. The BBC's strategy is to ensure, in coordination with the European Brain Council and with the support of DG Santé, the establishment of a European Brain Plan. To achieve this strategy in line with the European Commission's mission to protect the health of Europeans, the BBC has engaged in exchanges with DG Connect and DG Health its willingness to include mental health and brain disorders as a priority but with the strong support and cooperation of the Member States through namely the BBC and other National Brain Councils. BBC as an NGO gathering 28 patient associations is currently working, in accordance with the DATA GOVERNANCE ACT, on the launching of a Data Altruistic Association (see video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCzsNognTm0&t=37s).

    Communication activities

The BBC is an active partner in the coordination of Brain Awareness Week, a global event with which the BBC has often associated (i.e. through STOA and before the pandemic) the European Parliament both in Brussels and in Strasbourg. On the occasion of the recent kick-off meeting (28 March 2022) of an Erasmus+ project "Care4Autism" coordinated by the BBC, we involved Ms Radka Maxova, MEP who presented the EP's activities in the field of autism. On 10 May 2022 the 8th NBC Academy took place, and focused on the development and harmonisation of different national brain plans in which the BBC is an active partner. BBC is participating in the campaign "Pledge for Science" coordinated by the European Brain Council. This campaign is calling for the prioritisation of brain research & innovation in the EU. This campaign is a response to recent policy developments, particularly those with possible implications for health and research – including a recent European Citizens’ Initiative on “Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics – Commit to a Europe Without Animal Testing”, which received over one million signatures, triggering a public hearing in the European Parliament (to take place on 25 May). EBC issued a separate statement supported by 58 organisation and 3678 sIgnatures (see https://www.braincouncil.eu/pledge-for-science-brain-research-and-innovation-in-the-eu/). In May 14 and 15 2024, BBC is organizing a European symposium" Are data the future for a better Brain and Mental Health" in which DG Connect and DG Santé will participate (see programme at https://www.braincouncil.be/symposium).
