At the heart of Betfair is the pioneering Betting Exchange which provides a safe and transparent betting platform with no commercial interest in betting outcomes, which benefits customers, regulators and sports bodies. Betfair also offers a range of other sports betting products, casino games and poker.
Just as more and more people are choosing to shop, keep up to date with their finances and pay their bills online, those that wish to gamble are also choosing to do so online. This change in consumer behaviour offers both opportunities and difficulties for governments who need to understand how to regulate a traditional industry which now operates in a new, more dynamic environment.
Betfair has always taken a prudent and cautious approach to regulatory compliance. Betfair is one of the largest online gambling companies in the world, and it offers its products in countries where it is allowed to customers who are over 18.
Our stated intention is to apply and obtain a licence in any jurisdiction in which we operate. Betfair is in favour of regulation and the implementation of viable licensing regimes and actively promotes the idea of common standards, best practices and sharing of information at the EU level.
There are many countries which do not have a regulatory regime for online gambling in place. In these countries, it is not possible to obtain an online gambling licence since there are none on offer. In these instances, Betfair operates under the licences that it holds elsewhere in the European Union.
