    Goals / Remit

    BAT is a leading, multi-category consumer goods business, established in 1902. Our purpose is to build A Better Tomorrow by reducing the health impact of our business through offering a greater choice of enjoyable and less risky products for our consumers. The company has announced a target of increasing the number of its non-combustible product consumers from 11 million to 50 million by 2030; and to achieve at least £5 billion in New Categories revenues in by 2025. BAT has also committed to encouraging those who otherwise continue to smoke, to switch completely to scientifically-substantiated, reduced-risk* alternatives.

    *Based on the weight of evidence and assuming a complete switch from smoking. These products are not risk-free and are addictive.

    British American Tobacco engages on issues that are relevant to its business, such as tobacco-related regulatory issues, taxation, movement of excisable products, corporate social responsibility, Better Regulation, intellectual property, preventing illicit trade and counterfeiting or circular economy.
    In particular, the following legislative proposals or policies were notably followed in 2021:
    - Tobacco taxation: revision of EU rules
    - Review of the requirements for packaging and feasibility of measures to prevent packaging waste
    - Directive 2019/904/EC on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products
    - Tobacco Products Directive (Directive 2014/40/EU) and proposals potentially impacting the review process of TPD
    - Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/1832 of 12 October 2021 amending Annex I to Council Regulation (EEC) No 2658/87 on the tariff and statistical nomenclature and on the Common Customs Tariff.
