Cliara is directly involved in the work of the European Small Islands Network (ESIN) which is lobbying EU parliamentarians and the Commission for greater attention to island issues. As member of the EISN EU Policy Group Cliara has participated in the development of submissions on the European Green Deal and sustainable island Development. As the Development Officer of Cliara I submitted a response on the Climate Pact Survey just yesterday.
We envisage playing an ever more proactive role in issues dealing with EU environmental, climate and social, justice in the coming years.
Cliara is responsible for providing support and guidance to the population on Clare Island in numerous areas including Development, Agriculture, fisheries, employment, Health, Environment, Transport etc. This means we need to be aware of and feed into EU policy and legislative development processes.
As the Island Development Office Cliara is also responsible for promoting sustainable tourism and development of the Marine, terrestrial and digital infrastructure necessary to respond to increasing population decline. Cliara also develops and maintains the Island Website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Cliara is a Development Organisation funded by the Irish Department of Culture, Heritage and Fisheries. The Island has recently undergone an in-depth consultation process to develop input for the development of Irish and European Law and Policy relevant to Island development, sustainability and environmental, economic and social wellbeing.
As a result of this Consultation process Cliara is acutely aware of the importance of being involved with the European Governance institutions and looks forward to being empowered to do so, despite the relatively small size of our island and our remoteness from the corridors of European Governance.
Clare Island is unique as the site of the most extensive scientific research program on any island in Europe and one of the most studies islands in the world. The Royal Irish Society has commissioned two extensive studies of the Island. There first in 1909-11 and the second from 1990 to 2018. this makes Clare Island of immense scientific importance for research of the impacts of climate change, marine and terrestrial biodiversity and Agri-cultural research.
Cliara is working with ESIN and other Island networks as well as environmental and Community networks to bring the scientific and traditional knowledge of Clare Island and its population to national and European forums working on Climate, environmental justice and Community rights.
We look forward to playing a helpful role in informing EU Law and Policy development in these and other areas which directly impact on the rights and interests of the Island and its community.- Meetings
