    Goals / Remit

    AZTI (www.azti.es) is a non-profit private foundation committed to generate wealth and value for current and future society. Is member of Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), an alliance formed by 4 collaborative research centers and 12 technology centers with the aim of developing advanced technological solutions for the Basque companies.

    We work to contribute to the great challenges facing humanity. Our objectives and fields of application are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) adopted by the UN: climate action (SDG 13), life bellow water (SDG 14), good health and well-being (SDG 3), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) and zero hunger (SDG 2).

    Our research activity is focused on two main areas: marine rersearch and food reserach.

    AZTI has opted for avant-garde scientific and technological infrastructures that give an effective response to market needs. We have three headquarters, located in the north of Spain in Bizkaia (Sukarrieta and Derio) and Gipuzkoa (Pasaia).
    AZTI' s staff is the main resource to reach the proposed achievements: 249 professionals among whom 57% are women and 58% doctors.

    With more than 30 years of experience, the organisation has developed an important network of collaborating centers both at national and international level, promoting more than 4.000 projects with industries and public institutions, including 312 projects running at present, reaching a turnover in 2019 of 20 M€.

    As research and innovation center AZTI’s main activity is focused on its Applied Research projects, New products and services, Scientific advice and Business revitalization and addressed to private companies, scientific organizations, professional associations as well as local, national and international administrations.

    Main EU files targeted

    AZTI is active and follows all these initiatives, strategies and policies that are related to our areas of interest. As such, the Common Fisheries Policy, the Common Agricultura Policy, the 2030 European Food Strategy, the European Circular Bioeconomy, the European Green Deal, the Blue/Green Economy, the European Climate Strategy etc are within our areas of interest.

    Communication activities

    AZTI participates in European projects belonging to different Programmes such as The European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation H2020, EIT Food, PRIMA, LIFE Environment Programme, Interreg Cooperation Programme, different calls for proposals and projects from the DG Mare, DG Environment or EASME, the European Agency for Small and Medium Entreprises.

    Other activities

    3 scientists from AZTI are members of the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) of the European Commission.
    AZTI scientific personnel participate or lead different scientific committees, the participation in the Scientific Committee of the European Environmental Agency, in the board of directors of the scientific association of economists in the field of natural resource economics and Environmental (AERNA), in the European Society of Sensory Sciences and in the European Association for Food Safety, in addition to occupying relevant positions in the Scientific Committees from Regional Environmental and Fisheries Management Bodies, especially in those that deal with the most important fisheries for Basque fleets (IATTC (1), ICCAT (5), ICES (64), IOTC (3), WCPFC (1)). An AZTI researcher is the president of the Economic Committee for Fisheries (AER) of the European Commission. In addition, research staff of AZTI acts in the European scientific coordination on behalf of the EU before ICCAT, IOTC, IATTC and WCPFC.
