    Goals / Remit

    The goals are divided through Science, Education, Membership and Advocacy activities and include: raising awareness about neurological diseases/brain health (including gender imbalances) and lessening the burden of neurological diseases in Europe. This is reached by increasing knowledge about health and care disparities, research on treatment, risk factors, preventive and protective measures, interacting with national neurological societies, sub-specialty societies and patient organisations. Creating an inter professional and international community that is working towards the vision and mission of EAN, guaranteeing optimal skills and competencies at all levels, achieving a balance between general neurology and subspecialties, improving standards of care and patient outcomes

    Main EU files targeted

    The European Academy of Neurology closely monitors policy developments in the fields of health and neuroscience – in particular neurology and brain health. The EAN takes an in interest in and provides it’s input on policies and proposals in the areas of public health, pharmaceutical legislation, professionals matters for neurologists such as accreditation and issues of labour migration, data sharing and research funding programmes. EAN also collaborates and provides feedback to the WHO and is an active member of the European Brain Council, The Biomedical Alliance for Europe and the patient representative organisation, European Federation of Neurological Associations

    EAN has 48 National Neurology Society members, who span all EU and EEA member states as well as the UK, Switzerland and additionally countries in central and Eastern Europe, including Russia, Turkey and Israel.

    EAN hosts two national society forums per year, in which it communicates with national society representatives and provides updates on important European and regional policy developments.

    EAN also organises two European Brain Health Summits per year since 2022, one of which takes place online and the other is held in Brussels, the last of which took place at the European Parliament on December 8, under the auspices of the Czech EU Council presidency.

    EAN was also participant in the Horizon 2020 project European Brain Research Agenda (EBRA) as a linked-third party to the European Brain Council.

    In addition to EAN’s close cooperation with its 47 national neurological societies, it has memoranda of understanding with 34 societies representing global, regional and subspecialty societies. EAN also has strong relations with the World Federation of Neurology as well as the American Academy of Neurology.

    EAN frequently publishes peer-reviewed position papers in the European Journal of Neurology, including its Brain Health Strategy in 2022 and a forthcoming Strategic Research Agenda which will be published in Q2 of 2023.
