    Goals / Remit

The European Bottom Fishing Alliance (EBFA) is a fishing industry coalition of 20 000 fishermen and women representing 7 000 vessels from 14 European coastal countries, ranging from artisanal to large scale bottom fisheries.

The EBFA was founded in March 2022 by fishing organisations to support the use of active bottom gears as a sustainable activity. We gathered to offer a united voice and to defend, support and showcase the environmental, economic, social and cultural realities of fishing operations with active bottom gears across the European Union fishing nations so that the European legislation could be based on science and facts.

Together, we deliver 25% of total European seafood landings. We provide healthy and sustainable food supplies for millions of people. We want to keep driving economic and social value to the coastal and peripheral communities of 14 European countries while working towards more sustainability.

    Main EU files targeted

The EBFA wishes to make decision-makers aware of the reality of bottom fishing activities. Provide facts and data for credible, science-based and reasoned policy options for balanced and responsible political decision-making which shall respect the three pillars of sustainability and contribute to achieve all SDGs. Additionally, the EBFA aims to prevent the introduction of arbitrary restrictive or limiting measures for bottom fishing, whether technical or spatial, via fisheries or environmental legislation, generally and specifically by means of the implementation of the EU Action Plan to conserve fisheries resources and protect marine ecosystems. Lastly, the EBFA aims to defend the sustainability and overall importance of all these widespread bottom fishing methods in all EU member states and demonstrate that these fisheries are well regulated, controlled, researched and widely certified. Support the EU to remain a world leader on effective and sustainable fisheries management by promoting measures which are rational, science-based, understandable and applicable for professional fishers who work to achieve a sustainable contribution to food supply and strive to be the guardians of the sea.
