    Goals / Remit

The Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI) is a research program of ILA dedicated to conducting precompetitive research into lead battery technology. In terms of its remit in the EU, CBI is looking to develop lead battery research projects with European Partners. All CBI staff based in the Brussels Office are employed by ILA VZW, the new association created in Brussels to represent CBI and CBI’s research strategic agenda. Its staff will work on Consortium for Battery Innovation precompetitive research-related only.
The Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI) is a program of ILA. To represent CBI in Brussels, ILA established the ILA VZW. CBI will be the organization represented in EU institutions relevant to future battery technology. That is why, for instance, the website listed in the registration form is that of the Consortium for Battery Innovation (batteryinnovation.org).

    Main EU files targeted

Battery act and battery-related policies. In this respect, CBI supports the EU’s move to reinforce workers' safety, while it proposes to make this move with some form of transitional measure. Lead batteries make up 50% of the global market share for rechargeable batteries. They are an essential, safe, and integral part of the EU economy.

In its Brussels-based activity, CBI's main attention will be focused on the following:

    - European Parliament Resolution on Renewable Energy Directive (RED):
    https://www.europarl.europa.eu/legislative-train/theme-a-european-green-deal/file-revision-of-the-renewable-energy-directive

    - Policy updates of the industrial strategy that follows the New EU Industrial Strategy such as this: https://commission.europa.eu/system/files/2021-05/communication-industrial-strategy-update-2020_en.pdf

    - Funding schemes related to employment policies in the area of the battery.

    - Regulations in the field of Raw Materials such as the Critical Raw Material Act.

CBI's attention, for instance, gravitates around the following areas.

    Renewable Energies.
Lead batteries are a 97% collection & recycling rate. Approximately 85% of the new lead battery is made from recycled materials. This makes lead batteries the perfect example of a product existing in a closed loop-No other battery technology meets these sustainability credentials. That is why we would like to ensure this trend continues to improve and that we can advocate for an always more renewable source-based economy in Europe.

    Industrial Strategy

They support and protect critical infrastructure and are fundamental to important EU industries including motive power, UPS and telecoms, renewable energy storage and the automotive sector (virtually all vehicles (including hybrid and electric vehicles) in the EU will utilize a lead battery. We want to make sure our industry keeps on strengthening EU’s wealth and autonomy now and in the future.

    Employment

Lead batteries and their components are manufactured in 20 EU Member States and the whole value chain employs 32,000 workers. Lead’s highly skilled workforce delivers highly strategic output for the EU’s economy. We aim to ensure that their aspirations and activity are protected.

    Raw Material

CBI is interested in observing the raw material lists of the EU. Other non-ferrous materials are combined with lead to make products that are essential to the EU’s citizens and industry. It is our interest that the EU keeps having its own strategic autonomy in this respect.
