Goals / Remit
The Kurdish Institute is a movement, moving the Flemish and Brussels society to exhibit more empathy around Human and People’s Rights in the Middle East, Eurasia and the Caucasus and make the Flemish & Brussels' public aware of the “super-diversity” in our society.
Senstitize: We raise awareness among the general public through our press operations, social media and educational activities. We inform policy makers and opinion makers through conferences.
Activate: we launch campaigns on human and peoples’ rights in Kurdistan, Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran (our working region).
Building Bridges: bridges between Flanders and Kurdistan, Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran (our working region). And bridges between the different peoples and ethnic-religious groups to which our working region is so rich.
Culture: we attach great importance to respect for cultural diversity. We want to give diaspora communities the opportunity to make their cultural wealth visible during cultural activities.Main EU files targeted
The Kurdish Institute wishes to contribute to a democratic, peaceful and lasting solution of the Kurdish problem. We believe that this can only be achieved through a dialogue between the parties concerned, in which also the EU must play its part.
Millions of peoples and minorities in the Kurdish regions of Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq are still seeing their rights violated: they do not have security or freedom of speech, nor access to basic education (in their own language), a viable income, etc. These people are struggling to make a decent living.
We therefore advocate, facilitate and put European solidarity into practice. We aim to exhibit in the European Institutions more empathy and awareness around Human and People’s Rights in the Middle East, Eurasia and the Caucasus. Our objective is to get in contact with Expert Groups that have been setup by Directorates General within the European Institutions and are responsible for drafting legislative proposals. We hereby refer to Expert Groups that are focussed on human rights, people rights and the rights of minorities. In order to strengthen our voice, the Kurdish Institute has established networks, strategic partnerships and long-term collaborations with NGO’s, human rights movements, peace- and solidarity movements.
The Kurdish Institute sees different leverages in the pursuit of European solidarity. Policy work, building a strong movement, collaboration, the awareness of the ‘shared interest’, the deployment of different parties involved and innovative and result-oriented work. Our institute is thereby driven by values of human dignity, solidarity, equality and integrity.
At the level of the European Parliament, we focus on Political Groups, Members of Parliament and key people such as rapporteurs, coordinators and officials to exert influence on the reports, proposals and amendments that they drafted (or are going to draft).Address

The Kurdish Institute financially ‘survives’ thanks to ‘project-based financing’ that we receive from the Flemish Government (Department Culture, Youth and Media). For instance, in January 2022, the Kurdish Institute received confirmation from the Department of Culture, Youth and Media that a grant will be awarded for the so-called NETLAB project. NETLAB stands for “Network for Local Active Citizenship from Intercultural Cooperation”. The NETLAB project aims to create a network at national level of people in Flanders who, based on intercultural cooperation and rooted in a cluster of shared values, take up active citizenship in their village or city.
The shared set of values we refer to are inspired by the Rojava model of society. Rojava, the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, is a region par excellence where the Kurdish Institute has special knowledge and expertise. From contacts with strategic partners and willing cities and municipalities, we are convinced that with this project we are highlighting a current social and pressing issue.
The themes around which NETLAB is built are intercultural cooperation, local active citizenship, participation and basic democracy. In that sense, the project certainly contributes to strengthening a sustainable, inclusive, supportive and democratic society. -

Communication activities
Since many years the Kurdish Institute organises – with the support of partner organisations and political fractions and/or parties – (at the least) 1 annual conference in the European Parliament. With these conferences, we wish to contribute to a democratic, peaceful and lasting solution of the Kurdish problem. We believe that this can only be achieved through a dialogue between the parties concerned, in which also the EU must play its part. Our conferences bring together internationally recognized speakers from various disciplines, expertise and fields.
Topics can vary from the recent developments and international right in Northeast-Syria, North-Iraq, Iran and Turkey, but also from the resettlement of refugees, the revolution in Rojava, the dangerous and alarming situation of the Daesh prison camps in North-Syria, the Kurdish Women Movement, etc.Other activities
