    Goals / Remit

In sum, the Crop Trust was established in 2004 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, and our mission is to both conserve the world’s crop diversity and make it available to farmers, scientists, and breeders, as a pre-requisite for food security. Crop diversity, one of the world’s least recognized but most valuable natural resources, provides the genetic building blocks for adapting agriculture to meet pressing demands. When we lose diversity we lose essential traits, such as drought tolerance, for combatting a changing climate and to feed a growing global population. Despite this, the crop collections that hold this genetic diversity are at great risk around the globe. The Crop Trust fulfils its mandate by providing long-term, sustainable financing to key international, regional, and national collections of crops that are vital for food security and nutrition, particularly in least developed countries.
