Goals / Remit
World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD) is a multilateral community of non-governmental organisations and individuals. Founded in 2009, with the joint aims to strengthen prevention, increase access to treatment and to promote recovery. The work of WFAD is built on the principles of universal fellowship and basic human and democratic rights. We believe that working for a drug-free world will promote peace, human development, democracy, tolerance, equality, freedom, and justice.
The World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD) is dedicated to identifying and promoting effective and affordable laws, policies, and programs consistent with modern culture and values that limit illegal drug use and illegal drug trafficking. These initiatives build on a century of international efforts to limit the use of illegal drugs, incorporated into three major treaties accepted by virtually every country in the world and managed by the United Nations. The WFAD further adheres to the CRC and CEDAW conventions.Main EU files targeted
The WFAD mainly targets the following areas of legislative proposal and policies: Organised crime & human trafficking; Drugs policy; EU response to drugs; Crime prevention; EU drugs strategy. Including proposals aiming at ensuring human rights, the rights of children, and other groups.

Communication activities
The WFAD implements several projects together with members, in Belarus, Georgia, India, the western Balkans, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter entails a country office and an East and Central African Liaison Office, which works closely with the East African Regional Network. The WFAD coordinates the WFAD Gender Working group, focusing particularly on advancing gender-sensitive approaches, equality, and equal access within our field.
The WFAD holds a seat in the Civil Society Forum on Drugs (CSFD), an expert group to the EU Commission, since 2013. The WFAD participates in 'Working group 2': Relations with International Institutions, the CSFD’s WG2 focuses on EU and international drug policy. It is mandated by CSFD to consider CSFD’s position on issues as they related to international bodies and events. It works on drafting inputs from CSFD for submission to such bodies and events, ensuring that the CSFD’s voice is heard on international matters of importance in drug policy. Moreover, the WFAD participates in 'Working Group 4' on Emerging trends and Crosscutting issues, focusing particularly on gender, age, and other intersecting aspects within drug policy.
The WG2 has engaged in a number of activities over its mandates. First, the production of a series of policy papers and advocacy notes targeted at (primarily) EU actors with the objective of providing inputs and recommendations on key aspects of global drug policy from the CSFD’s perspective. Second, members of the CSFD have been supported to attend meetings of important stakeholders to provide key inputs on pertinent issues from a CSFD perspective. Furthermore, several position papers were created and put forth by the CSFD and working group 2, including a response to the new EMCDDA Mandate. WFAD partook in the gender analysis of the EU Drug Action plan and Strategy, providing recommendations for further action, and actively engages on these topics on a regular basis.
The WFAD was selected to represent the Global Voice of Prevention in the Civil Society Task Force on Drugs for the UNGASS meetings in 2016, and selected to further represent the global voice of prevention during the High-level Ministerial Meeting in 2019. During the UNGASS process, the WFAD representative functioned as the editor of the Global Civil Society Survey. The WFAD was further present at the first WHO Meeting on drugs and advocated for the inclusion of prevention in WHO's priorities around the World Drug Problem.
The WFAD holds ECOSOC status and organises side events during the annual United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs. During the 2023 Intersessional session leading up to the 67th Mid-term review, the WFAD Secretary General partook in the UNODCs "Engaging minds: Fireside chats with Civil society", held in Vienna and published online.
WFAD is further a member of the VNGOC and sat in the Nomination Committee to the Board of the VNGOC in 2019.Other activities
