Goals / Remit
The main aim of the Allianz pro Schiene e.V. (Pro-Rail Alliance) is to increase the market share of the railways, both for passenger transport and freight transport.
The Pro-Rail Alliance's medium term target (by 2020) is to reach a market share of at least 15 percent for rail passenger transport and at least 25 percent for rail freight. The basis for calculating market share in both cases is transport performance (passengers/tonnes multiplied by kilometres).
The organisation's other goals closely follow its main aim, namely:
1. Improving the image of the railways in politics and in public
2. Securing and increasing public funding of the railways (investment in infrastructure, funding of the regional railways)
3. Creating a fair competitive environment to enable the railways to compete with other modes of transport (fair tax rules, exposing the truth about the real cost of transport)
4. Maintaining and increasing the railway's superior environmental record
5. Maintaining and increasing the railway's superior safety recordMain EU files targeted

In the financial year 2012 three projects were supported by the European Commission:
The EU-funded project ‘Understanding Social behaviour for Ecofriendly multimodal mobility (USEmobility) analysed the individual reasons that lie behind selecting a mode of transport. USEmobility surveyed citizens in six European countries (Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Hungary and Netherlands) who have modified their mobility mix in the last five years.

The aim of the FLAVIA project is to improve intermodal freight transport logistics between central and southeastern Europe, while at the same time strengthening the environmentally friendly modes of transport rail and inland waterways. The Pro-Rail Alliance supports the process of collecting and disseminating the examples of Best Practice modal shifts and helps the partner countries in the FLAVIA project to set up their own broad pro railway alliances. The project aims to raise awareness among politicians about the business and competitive environments that are needed for eco-friendly rail transport to be successful.

The project ECORailS addresses the improvement of energy efficiency and the further reduction of the environmental impact of railways. The target groups are regional Public Transport Administrations (PTAs) which play a key role today when it comes to improving the quality and environmental performance of passenger rail transport. ECORailS provides Guidelines for the PTAs in order to successfully include environmental criteria in their awarding procedures.
