Goals / Remit
Main EU files targeted

Other activities
Both ENDS is calling at all policy-making levels for international economic legislation, agreements and rules to be changed so that they do not undermine human rights and the environment and instead contribute to long-term environmental sustainability and social equity. We are also calling for developing countries be given certain exemptions in negotiations on trade and investment agreements, so that they have the opportunity to develop their economies.
In our engagement with the EU Commission department responsible for EU policy on trade with countries beyond the EU's borders [DG Trade] we focus on three main processed:
One is decision-making process and negotiations at the World Trade Organization [WTO]. During the eleventh WTO Ministerial Conference 10 - 13 December 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina the EU commission organised regular meetings with CSOs for debriefings and discussions of the ongoing negotiations in which Both ENDS participated, as well as in the “Civil Society Dialogue - Debriefing on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) 11th Ministerial Conference” organized by the EU commission in Brussels on 24/01/2018.
Another focus is on the EU negotiations of bilateral trade and investment agreements, for this we participated in Civil Society Dialogues (CSD) organised by DG Trade on 10/04/2019 “EU-Indonesia - Sustainability Impact Assessment draft final report and state of play of the trade negotiations”, on 06/09/2018 “Update on EU-Mercosur Trade Negotiations” followed by a meeting with the EU Chief Negotiator for Mercosur on 27/03/2019 to discuss the state of play of the negotiations, as well as the situation in Brazil and the impact on the trade talks, and a CSD on 28/06/2019 “Civil Society Dialogue on Africa”.
Both ENDS has long been drawing attention to the negative consequences of investment treaties on developing countries and is particularly concerned about the so called Investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms in the current treaties. To make investment policies fair and sustainable and to ensure that they do not harm people and the environment, the ISDS mechanism included in all these treaties must be removed as soon as possible. In this context Both ENDS participated in meetings with DG Trade to discuss options for a multilateral reform of investment dispute resolution on 03/04/2017, 13/04/2018, 09/10/2018 and 22/03/2019
Furthermore: 30/05/2017 participation in a DG Trade consultation about The Trade Sustainability Impact Assessment (SIA) in support of negotiations with China.
In February 2018 Both ENDS and other civil society partners from Europe and the Global South met with representatives from different directorates of the Commission to discuss issues related to EU trade, deforestation and human rights violations in agri-commodity producing countries and the Commission’s agenda to develop an Action Plan on Deforestation and Forest Degradation. We met again with representatives from various Commission directors in June 2018 on the same topic.
Both ENDS and civil society partners from Europe and the Global South made written submissions during the public consultations on “Stepping-up EU Action against Deforestation and Forest Degradation” in January 2019 and on “Deforestation and forest degradation – stepping up EU action” in February 2019.- Meetings
