Goals / Remit
Concern Worldwide is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organisation dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries. We work in partnership with the very poorest people in these countries, directly enabling them to improve their lives, as well as using our knowledge and experience to influence decisions made at a local, national and international level that can significantly reduce extreme poverty. Concern envision a world where no-one lives in poverty, fear or oppression; where all have access to a decent standard of living and the opportunities and choices essential to a long, healthy and creative life; a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
Our mission is to help people living in extreme poverty achieve major improvements in their lives which last and spread without ongoing support from Concern. Concern’s core values derive from a single central value: Extreme poverty must be targeted. The quality of our overall endeavour must ultimately be measured by its contribution to the rapid elimination of the extreme form of poverty defined by the United Nations as “absolute poverty”.
Our other values, stated below, are derived from this central value:
• Respect for people comes first.
• Gender equality is a prerequisite for development.
• Development is a process not a gift.
• Greater participation leads to greater commitment.
• All governments have responsibility for poverty elimination.
• Emergencies call for rapid response.
• The environment must be respected.
• Good stewardship ensures trust
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set down eight objectives that all the world’s countries and leading development institutions have agreed to try to achieve by 2015. Those goals have guided the work of Concern over the past 10 years and have shaped our education, advocacy and policy work in Ireland, the UK and the US. They have driven our cooperation in Alliance2015, a strategic partnership we formed 10 years ago which sees seven European NGOs working together towards the achievement of the MDGs.
Some of the key areas we focus on are:
Education
• 72 million children around the world are not enrolled in school; Concern Worldwide focuses on providing basic education to those who need it most. Access to education is not only a basic human right, but also a key factor in reducing poverty and child labour.
Emergencies
• Many of the countries where Concern Worldwide works are highly vulnerable to emergencies as a result of conflicts and natural disasters. They are prone to floods, storms, earthquakes and droughts. We work with vulnerable communities in countries prone to disaster helping them prepare as much as possible to deal with the next one.
Health
• Today, there are an estimated 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty, most of whom regularly experience health problems. Malnutrition causes illnesses such as diarrhoea, tuberculosis and malaria, HIV and AIDS to worsen. By tackling undernourishment we can improve the health of entire communities.
Livelihoods
• We have been supporting the livelihoods of the world’s poorest people for over 30 years. Put simply, “livelihoods” doesn’t just mean a person’s ability to earn a living, it’s about everything that makes an impact on a person’s life. This includes whether they have enough food to sustain themselves.
HIV and AIDS
•
Combined programmes
• In addition to the above five sectors, we also run programmes that combine two or more of these areas of work, such as the Realigning Agriculture to Improve Nutrition (RAIN) project in Zambia and the graduation programme in Burundi.Main EU files targeted
