    Other activities

European Citizens' Initiative: As a result of concerted effort by Democracy International, the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) was incorporated into the Treaty on European Union. DI successfully worked for the inclusion of the ECI through several campaigns, beginning at the Convention on the Future of the European Union 2002-2003. We then began work promoting citizen-friendly rules governing its use. Democracy International is actively engaged in the revision of the ECI provisions in 2015.

Treaty change and Convention: in August 2013 Democracy International launched the campaign ‘Democratic Europe Now’. The overarching goals of the campaign are to generate an open and democratic debate on the future of Europe, involving the spheres of politics, media and civil society; and to give citizens the opportunity to shape the decision-making process over important European issues. Democracy International worked with an alliance of civil society organisations from across the political spectrum that share an interest in democratic reform in the EU and jointly called for a new Convention on democratic reform of the EU.
