    Goals / Remit

    The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) is the largest organisation of journalists in Europe, representing over 320,000 journalists in 73 journalists’ organisations across 45 countries.

    The EFJ was created in 1994 within the framework of the IFJ Constitution to represent the interests of journalists’ unions and associations and their journalists. It has established an independent legal status (number: 0503.985.472) as an international non-profit association (AISBL, association internationale sans but lucratif) since February 2013 according to the Belgian law.

    The EFJ fights for social and professional rights of journalists working in all sectors of the media across Europe through strong trade unions and associations. The EFJ promotes and defends the rights to freedom of expression and information as guaranteed by Article 10 of the European convention on human rights.

    Authors’ rights: very active in lobbying on Copyright Directive together with other authors

    - relations with EU Commissioners (within DG CONNECT) and European Parliament on the impact of new technologies, the need to reinforce authorship and moral rights at EU level, the recognition of a right to remuneration for primary and secondary uses of journalists’ works (the current EU communications on Intellectual Property in the Internal Market contains clear recognition of journalists as authors and the need for them to have a say in the use of their work) and unfair contracts

    -lobby on the future orphan work directive and will pursue its actions in relation to the directive on collective management, future European Commission’s work on licensing and private copy dialogue. It spoke at the EU hearing on collective management (November 2010) , European Parliament conference on the Future of copyright in the digital era (June 2011), and the European Parliament Working group on copyright (June 2011)
    -lobby against buy-out contracts.
