    Goals / Remit

    (EMTA) is a platform for collaboration and policy exchange of some 25 main European capitals and metropolitan areas responsible for the organisation and coordination of public transport in larger urban areas. Members share experiences and know how on the performance of common the tasks, i.e. the tendering and awarding transport services, managing service contracts, invest in transport infrastructure, develop fare strategies and ticketing schemes, plan for sustainable and innovative solutions, coordinate govern and finance integrated urban transport networks.

    Core mission:
    To exchange best practices and to provide for a quality network of integrated mobility in cities and metropolitan areas and bring good value to the transport customers in an effective, viable and environmentally sustainable way.

    Our objectives:

    • Connect senior managers represented in our membership and benefit from sharing present, developed or developing expertise and knowledge on strategic, tactical and operational level;

    • Participate actively in building and influencing the EU-legal framework to enable fair, equitable and inclusive legislative rules on public transport in Europe;

    • Position EMTA as a valued partner to peer stakeholders in European transport policy, in EU-research programmes, -projects and -consultations;

    • Collect cities transport performance data and share successful mobility trends;

    • Promote sustainable mobility planning in associated cities and metropolitan areas;

    • Study innovations on possible game changers and disruptive developments in the public transport sector that may impact the daily work of authorities and to support introduction and deployment of smart mobility solutions.
    EMTA sets up working groups to:

    - Identify relevant issues and challenges to explore in order to prepare a position for the general meeting on specific matters;
    - Collect data and consolidate facts and figures to support a research initiative;;
    - Disseminate findings of research and study of new developments in transport;


    EMTA expresses its views and positions by:
    - Updating the EMTA website: www.emta.com
    - Publishing a digital newsletter 3 – 4 times a year
    - A handbook of individual members in a muliti-annual Directory
    - Produce the EMTA Barometer with data of annual performances of members
    - Thematic briefs or surveys on urban transport or transport planning related subjects
    - Take part in public consultations set out by the European Commission
    - Lobbying and voicing its position in European legislative proposals, where needed and possible aligning with peer stakeholders.

    FP7 project City-HUB: defining key determinants for a successful interchange.
    Deliverable: ‘Guide for Efficient and Smart Design and Integrated Management’ and the City-HUB Model which will provide specific guidance on how to put these findings into practice and develop a successful interchange.
    These guidelines will be tested in several European interchanges. Final results will be available in February 2015. http://www.cityhub-project.eu/.
