    Goals / Remit

    The European Sunlight Association a.s.b.l. (ESA) was originally established in 2002 to promote benefits of sun bed use and provide balanced information on the risks and benefits of UV light. Today ESA is recognised by all stakeholders as the representative European association for and the voice of the European indoor tanning industry.
    The European Sunlight Association (ESA) represents national indoor tanning associations and leading manufacturers of indoor tanning equipment.

    The European Sunlight Association’s primary aims are to:
    - Promote objective and balanced information about
    responsible indoor tanning;
    - Improve the quality standards and norms with regard to tanning devices in Europe and worldwide;
    - Work with regulators and promote harmonised European legislation;
    - Support its national member associations through information, advice and training;
    - Be a credible partner to all stakeholders by providing balanced information on UV exposure;
    - Promote research on both positive and negative effects of UV radiation;
    - Educate consumers about the risks and benefits of UV radiation.

    ESA currently has 25 members from 15 countries, of which 14 are EU countries. Through its national associations and individual company membership, ESA represents most indoor tanning facilities, manufacturers and distributors of indoor tanning equipment in Europe.

    Main EU files targeted

    - The EC is currently updating the SCCP opinion on sun beds from 2007. The SCENIHR has been mandated to look at the current "state-of-the-art" regarding professional sun bed use. ESA has been consulted as one of the major stakeholders.

    - Together with CENELEC and the Austrian Standards Institute (ASI), ESA has recently initiated the development of the new Euronorm EN16489-1 to 3 regarding the training of tanning facility staff and the provision of services by such facilities. We currently implement a pilot project in the UK togther with our national member association TSA and will then help rolling out this new standard further all over Europe through a training and licensing scheme in cooperation with ASI.

    - ESA is closely following the review of national legislation in several European countries regarding professional sun bed use.

  • EU Structures

    Groups (European Commission)

    - CENELEC - EN16489, ESA and its members provided numerous experts to the working group that developed the new standard. Next to the European Commission, DG Health & Consumers, also the European Cancer League (ECL) and the European Association for the Co-ordination of Consumer Representation (ANEC) were partners in this project.

    - ESA provided input through several meetings with the EC and submitted a long list of scientific publications regarding risks & benefits of UV radiation, specifically through sun bed use, to the SCENIHR. The latter is in the process of reviewing the state-of-the-art with respect to sunbeds with a view to facilitating an update of the EC position on tanning devices.
