Goals / Remit
GML Limited is a diversified financial holding company established in 1997. Its goal is to obtain justice for the unlawful expropriation of its investment in the former Yukos Oil Company.
GML was the majority shareholder of the former Yukos Oil Company via its subsidiaries, Yukos Universal Limited and Hulley Enterprises Limited. In 2014, an independent international Arbitral Tribunal in The Hague ruled unanimously that Yukos was illegally expropriated by the Russian Federation. The Tribunal awarded compensation of $50 billion to the former majority shareholders.
In February 2020, The Hague Court of Appeal reinstated the Arbitral Awards, quashing a 2016 ruling of the District Court that had set them aside. Since May 2020, the legal proceedings are before the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, where the Russian Federation has filed a cassation appeal.
GML aims to ensure that the Arbitral Awards are upheld, and the Russian Federation complies with them.Main EU files targeted
GML aims to inform the EU institutions about its legal proceedings in the Netherlands, since those proceedings are relevant to a number of EU principles and policies, including the rule of law, promotion of investment, energy policy, and relations with the Russian Federation.
