    Goals / Remit

    Main EU files targeted

The context the European Union will have to deal with in the upcoming years looks complex. Difficult negotiations between the UK and the EU after the Brexit referendum in 2016 are ongoing in 2019 after Theresa May has resigned. The Transatlantic relations are underlying the moody and undiplomatic ways to do politics of Trump. Cybersecurity is a crucial issue in a global context where China keeps pushing for lead positions on digital and economic markets. The rule of law is threatened in Poland and Hungary with decisions taken by autocratic leaders. Climate change and the reduction of CO2 emissions also require European and worldwide action from political and economic players.
How will Europe’s future look like after the European elections 2019? Will Europe pull itself together or will it give in to pressures from populists, interferences and provocations from its mighty neighbours in a situation where not much support, moral or otherwise, can be expected from the other side of the Atlantic? Urgent solutions, such as the legislation on immigration, the regulation of financial markets and saveguarding democracy will mark European policies during the next term.
Euroscepticism has its roots in a lack of knowledge and understanding of European history and of the importance of EU institutions and policy for the daily life of citizens. The Brussels office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung supports the process of European integration and strives to make its process transparent

    Communication activities

Due to our location in the capital of the European Union, the Brussels office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung is able to perform a liaison function between the foundation’s international offices, its headquarters in Berlin, its partners, and the European and international institutions based in Brussels. This special function is particularly reflected in our role as the host of visitor groups, ranging from expert meetings to extended, intensive programs for NGO representatives and/or student groups in formats such as capacity buildings. The involvement of young political and environmental activists from the newer EU member states and candidate countries is a particularly important part of this work. The main aim of our visitors’ program is to provide a platform for dialogue between our partners and decision-makers in Brussels, offering them the possibility to participate in political processes at an early stage. Partners from candidate countries also have the opportunity to network with European NGOs and to share the experiences of those in the newer member states, giving a valuable perspective to their work.

    Other activities

The foundation focuses on the European Union's common foreign and security policy, on enlargement, as well as on the crisis regions in the Balkans and the Caucasus. The Foundation sees the promotion of political networks in Central and Eastern Europe as one of its priorities.

A particular focus of the foundation's work is the promotion of sustainable development. As such, it supports projects that work against the destruction of the global ecosystem and instead promote the development of renewable energies. Other goals that guide the Foundation's activities include overcoming patriarchal structures of domination and supporting conflict management and peace promotion measures in crisis areas.
