    Goals / Remit

    The Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) is the independent national human rights institution for children living in Ireland. Established under the Ombudsman for Children Act, 2002, as amended, the OCO has an overall statutory mandate to promote and monitor the rights and welfare of children and young people up to the age of 18 years living in Ireland.

    Under the 2002 Act, the Ombudsman for Children’s core statutory functions are:

    • Investigating complaints made by or on behalf of children regarding the actions or inactions of a range of public bodies.
    • Promoting the rights and welfare of children and young people.
