    Goals / Remit

    Specialised Nutrition Europe (SNE) represents the interests of the European specialised nutrition industry in Europe.

    SNE members provide tailor made dietary solutions for populations with very specific nutritional needs including infants and young children, individuals under medical supervision, sportspeople, overweight and obese consumers, and those suffering from coeliac disease.

    SNE aims to be recognised for the importance of these products in Europe, which 90% of Europeans will need at some stage in their lives.

    The association aims to increase awareness and understanding of these specific products (the so-called foods for specific groups) and the way in which they meet the needs of European consumers with particular dietary requirements.

    With over fifty years of experience, SNE gathers and coordinates the detailed technical and regulatory expertise of members to develop common industry positions at EU level and help to support European public policy decisions.

    Other activities

    The specialised nutrition industry is one of the most strictly regulated sectors in the European Union, with legislation covering hygiene, additives, labelling, and advertising, among other areas.

    Given the contribution of these products to public health in Europe, specific legislation covering their composition, production, labelling and marketing has been harmonised at EU level since 1989, thereby guaranteeing a safe and effective use of these products by the consumers who rely on them. These strict levels of regulatory control support our industry aim of ensuring consumer trust.

    The specialised nutrition covers a broad scope of foods ranging from:

    - “Foods for Specific Groups” covered by Regulation (EU) 609/2013 (so-called FSG Regulation) and are intended for vulnerable groups of consumers (infants and young children, people with specific medical conditions and people undertaking energy-restricted diets to lose weight);

    - Food categories considered since the repeal of the PARNUTs Directive (Directive 2009/39/EC) (20th July 2016) as “normal foods” but whose specificities have been/ are currently discussed at EU and/ or national level, in order to allow for special consideration as part of the general EU food legislation framework (meal replacements for weight control, young child formulae, sports nutrition). This specific consideration is crucial to ensure appropriate nutritional composition and information of these foods, in line with the needs of the targeted population these foods are intended for.
