Relevant projects include
BUILD UPON and BUILD UPON2
Our Europe network is a coalition of 22 Green Building Councils (GBCs). Between 2016-17, 14 of these GBCs received funding under grant agreement No 649727 for the BUILD UPON project. This project is the world’s largest collaborative project on building renovation – bringing together 2,000 organisations, across 13 countries, at over 100 events in 2016-17.
It aimed to create a renovation revolution across Europe by helping countries to co-deliver strategies for renovating their existing buildings. These strategies, required by EU law are critical to cutting Europe’s energy use, reducing the impacts of climate change, and creating buildings that deliver a high quality of life for everyone
The second phase of the project started in June 2018 (Grant Agreement No 840926.). This phase of the project involved 8 GBCs in WorldGBC's Europe network working in partnership with Climate Alliance and BPIE. The project involved working with city and national goverment to develop renovation strategies and solutions to scale up energy efficient building renovation. Concluding in November 2021, it developed a common framework for local governments to track the holistic benefits of building renovation.
Energy Efficent Mortgages Action Plan
Between 2015-17, a number of GBCs in WorldGBCs Europe network participated in a H2020 project called the Energy Efficient Mortgage Action Plan (EeMAP). The consortium was led by the European Mortgage Federation – European Covered Bond Council (EMF-ECBC). The project partners are the Ca’Foscari University of Venice, RICS, European Regional Network of Green Building Councils, E.ON, and SAFE Goethe University Frankfurt.
EeMAP Initiative aimed to create a standardised “energy efficient mortgage”, where building owners are incentivised to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings or acquire an already energy efficient property by way of preferential financing conditions linked to the mortgage.
Level(s)
8 GBCs in the WorldGBC's Europe network are currently working on a three year project to implement Level(s), the European Commission’s new reporting framework on sustainable buildings. Level(s) is designed to give stakeholders across the value chain a ‘common language’ and a common set of sustainability indicators.
This project will see GBCs in eight countries work with government and industry stakeholders to explore how the key Level(s) indicators on wholelife carbon, circularity and indoor air quality can be practically implemented on a pan-European scale.
This will involve 4 key pillars of work:
• Aligning Level(s) with Europe’s leading green building certification schemes to provide more comparable data on the environmental performance of buildings
• Supporting the development of good quality data on the environmental and health impact of construction products
• Working with cities and public authorities to align wholelife carbon, circularity and indoor air quality indicators into procurement standards
• Building the capacity of product manufacturers and public authorities to understand and apply the indicators.
BuildingLife
BuildingLife is a regional project. It brings together a coalition of ten Green Building Councils across Europe - to drive decarbonisation of the building sector through private sector action and public sector policy. The project will support and accelerate the ambitions of the EU’s Green Deal in the building sector. The project will lead to outputs including an EU whole life carbon roadmap with policy recommendations towards the full decarbonisation of the sector by 2050. National roadmaps are also being developed by ten GBCs across Europe. Further details available here https://www.worldgbc.org/buildinglifeOther activities
