URBAN intergroup

The Council of European Municipalities and Regions celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2021, federating local and regional Europe. The Association is very active in the green deal package and all the related directives, in international cooperation leading the pan-European coalition PLATFORMA. It is also partner of the Covenant of Mayors in Europe but also in Sub-Saharan Africa. 2021 also marked the 15th anniversary of the European Charter for equality between women and men in local life created by CEMR; it was the occasion to pursue our work in the area of equality, extending it to other injustice and inequalities. The UN 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals remain our guiding principles for all CEMR strategic and policy work.
In terms of publications, we published a new edition of our survey on the implementation of the SDGs and an update of our study on structures and competences of local and regional governments in Europe (www.terri.cemr.eu). We also did a joint survey with the Committee of the Regions on the Recovery and Resilience Plans thus launching our monitoring work in this area, a survey to our members on gender balance in member associations’ leadership, a publication on how EU delegations work with local and regional governments in partner countries, and another one on local and regional governments’ actions in development education and awareness raising.
In addition to articles and news in brief posted on the CEMR bilingual website, we publish an ‘In Brief’ newsletter and thematic updates for our members, and the ‘Local Insight’ newsletter for external partners, and are active on Twitter (@ccrecemr).

The CEMR has lost its seat in the FIT FOR FUTURE PLATFORM after the departure from CEMR of Angelika Poth-Mögele, who was the person nominated.

The CEMR also participates in the Social dialogue, ESI Funds structured dialogue and Policy forum on development.
