    Goals / Remit

The European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC) is an industry association for the duty free and travel retail industry in Europe, serving the industry and its members to help create the right environment to allow the industry to achieve its potential and protect it when challenges arise.

    • ETRC serves to facilitate contact between members by organising seminars, conferences and meetings

    • ETRC provides tailored support programmes to members to promote the highest operating standards and responsible retailing in international travel

    • ETRC undertakes detailed research into relevant industry issues and provides actionable data relevant to members

    • ETRC communicates regularly with its members to spread awareness about the industry and the importance of duty free and travel retail for airports, airlines, ferries, cruise lines, retailers and brand owners

    • ETRC works closely with member companies, and other industry trade associations to identify challenges, where advocacy is required with European and national governments and regulatory bodies in order to safeguard and grow the business

ETRC is composed of national trade associations and direct corporate membership representing over 500 European companies. The European Travel Retail Confederation's operations are directed by its Supervisory and Managing Boards and carried out by a full-time secretariat.

    Main EU files targeted

ETRC has been representing its members interests in the field of taxation and customs policy for many years related to the operation of duty free and travel retail outlets in the EU and Europe as well as travellers duty free allowances.

A recent key issue that has been the subject of intense activity with the European Institutions has been associated with finding solutions to the problems being encountered by international travellers transiting through the EU carrying duty free liquids, etc. (LAGs) as a consequence of the upgraded aviation security rules adopted following the terrorist threat to trans-Atlantic aircraft in August 2006.

ETRC has been representing its members interests as new food labelling regulations were being considered by the EU, as well as on the deliberations by Parliament on the Retail Market Monitoring Report and the Single Market Act.

ETRC and its member associations and companies also made detailed submissions to the 2010 consultation on the review of the Tobacco Products Directive, specifically related to proposals that could have lead to a ban on the display of tobacco products in duty free retail outlets.

ETRC is delighted to be a member of the European Alcohol and Health Forum. As major retailers of premium alcohol products, our members are eager to play a responsible role in the sensible consumption of alcohol products in Europe.

ETRC also has a keen interest in the review of the Air Passenger Rights Regulation and has been calling for such legislation to stop the unfair practices by certain airlines of refusing to accept or charging people to bring on board items bought in airport duty free and travel retail shops.
