Profile
NABU is the German partner of BirdLife International. NABU, the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union, was founded already in 1899 as “Bund für Vogelschutz” (BfV, German Association for Bird Protection). Today, with about 540.000 members and supporters, it is the oldest and largest nature conservation NGO in Germany. NABU is a registered charity under German law (eingetragener, gemeinnütziger Verein). Due to the federal structure of Germany with shared responsibilities for nature conservation between the federal government and the governments of the 16 Federal States (Laender), NABU has 15 regional branches, and, in total, 1.600 local groups. In Bavaria, it is represented by the “Landesbund fuer Vogelschutz” (LBV, www.lbv.de).
Today, NABU and its regional branches own, rent and take care of more than 5.500 sites. About 80 nature conservation and nature information centres all over Germany are busy in managing these sites, monitoring species, organising excursions etc. Already from the early 1980ties, NABU took part in the development of the IBA-inventory for Germany, which was finished in 1987 (included in Grimmett & Jones 1989). In 1991, after Germanys reunification, NABU elaborated a new IBA-inventory for Eastern Germany. Additionally, NABU contributed to the update of the European IBA-inventory (Heath & Evans 2000). Together with the German Council for Bird Protection (DRV) and the German umbrella organisation of regional ornithological societies (DDA), since 1966 NABU works on the Red Data Book of Birds in Germany. In spring 2008, on the occasion of COP9 of the CBD, NABU, DRV and DDA published a report on “Birds and Biodiversity in Germany”. In NABUs central research institute, the Michael-Otto-Institut im NABU (MOIN) in Bergenhusen, Schleswig-Holstein, the German IBA-database is kept on actual state. Additionally, the MOIN does a lot of research work concerning the negative impacts of agriculture on bird populations, as well as on the impacts of windfarms on migratory and breeding bird populations. The banning of bird hunting and trapping is still a target of NABU. For example, NABU's youth organisation NAJU together with LIPU, the Italian BirdLife Partner and other NGOs, organises yearly camps at the straight of Messina and in Calabria to stop illegal hunting of raptors and storks. In Malta, NABU supports the Maltese BirdLife-partner in its struggle against hunting. During the last years since Malta´s accession to the EU, the target of a full implementation of the EU Birds Directive has been the main objective. In NABU Headquarters conservation department, about 20 staff are dealing with ornithology and bird protection, species and nature conservation, national and European conservation law, agriculture, regenerative energies, infrastructure planning and other topics. NABU and its regional branches in the Laender are busy in advising both the federal and the Laender-governments concerning national and regional conservation laws, as well as the implementation of international and European environmental and nature conservation law, especially the CBD and the Birds and Habitats Directives. In NABU´s regional offices, several employees are monitoring the most important infrastructure planning processes and projects.
Major campaigns are NABUs “Bird of the Year”-campaign, which started in 1971 and is one of the oldest and best known campaigns in nature conservation in Germany. Since its beginning, NABU takes part in the “World” and “European Bird Watch”-events organised by BirdLife International on the first weekend of October every year, focusing on migratory bird species. In 2005, NABU has started a nationwide garden bird count (“Hour of garden birds”, every year in May). Additionally, many local NABU-groups take part in the “International Bat Night” every autumn.Main EU files targeted
