    Goals / Remit

At SNV we believe that no-one should have to live in poverty. We are dedicated to a society in which all people, irrespective of race, class or gender, enjoy the freedom to pursue their own sustainable development. We focus on increasing people's income and employment opportunities in specific productive sectors such as agriculture, as well as improving their access to basic services including water, sanitation and hygiene, and energy.

SNV supports people to access and develop the capabilities, services and opportunities needed to live a healthy, productive and otherwise fulfilling life, while sustainably using the natural resources they depend on. Unlike many other development actors, SNV does not offer funding, but specialises in supporting the resourcefulness of development actors. SNV works with governments, local development partners, businesses, knowledge institutes and low-income communities, so that together we can transform ideas into policy, policy into action, and action into results.

In 2016, SNV improved the lives of over 6.1 million people, and from 2016 to 2018 we will improve the quality of life for over 20 million.

SNV uses its technical knowledge, 50 plus years of experience, passionate staff, extensive local presence and global footprint, to make a lasting difference in people’s lives.

    Other financial info

SNV finance's main priority is the realisation of growth in resource mobilisation while driving a reduced cost structure. The implementation of SNV's new SAPbyDesign programme supports the improved financial planning and reporting processes. Implementing the new ERP system was a milestone for the staff at the Head Office and for the finances teams in the country offices. With this programme, we have laid the foundation for more efficient financial planning and reporting processes. From 2017, our focus will be on the continuous improvement of these processes and internal controls. The implementation of SAPbyDesign has introduced more effective ICT controls and enable digital workflows at the Head Office and in the country offices.

In 2016, the Head Office finance team initiated a treasury transformation project that will run for 18-24 months. The objective of this project is to improve the management of financial risks, such as foreign exchange risks, liquidity risks, credit risks on banks and to rationalise and improve SNV's cash management systems by further centralising all treasury activities. Where possibile, incoming donor funds will be routed through the Netherlands to improve control of the funds.

In the next few years we will be placing more emphasis on improving the accounting support we provide our country offices. This will, in turn, improve the effectiveness of the support provided by the finance teams to their own country and project management teams.

    Other activities

At SNV, we need to convince global leaders of the need for inclusive change; generate and prove new solutions; address production, trade and governance; and build the capacities of those tasked with translating policies, rules and regulations into practical action we are determined to tackle the challenge. No matter how complex the international political stage becomes, no matter how the funding landscape changes, SNV will continue to be present, both on a local and international level, with the number one goal of eradicating poverty.
Our work focuses on three sectors: Agriculture, Energy, and Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene (WASH). By continuing to focus on these interconnected areas and adapting and expanding our approach within them, we will reach more people in more countries and ensure that they have every opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty.
We believe that eradicating poverty is possible when local and national governments, the private sector, civil society and communities work together. Each has a role to play to bring about change, and SNV works to bring these often conflicting parties together.
SNV bridges the gap between theory and practice, between policy decisions and effective solutions at scale. We implement approaches that are tailored to local needs and we believe that countries and communities themselves should be the owners of change. With the proper knowledge and guidance, we know that they can implement and maintain their own sustainable solutions to end poverty.
