Goals / Remit
EBU works towards an accessible and inclusive society with equal opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to fully participate in all aspects of social, economic, cultural and political life.
Its members are national organisations of the visually impaired in 41 European countries, including 25 EU member states.
Its goals are:
- To voice the concerns of blind and partially sighted people of Europe, namely in EU policy-making and through EU legislation
- To protect and promote their human, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, and full participation in society
- To enable them to express their views and aspirations and take collective action.Main EU files targeted
We actively work with European institutions in all areas of policy development that impact the lives of blind and partially sighted citizens. We respond to European Commission Green papers and consultations and take part in stakeholder events organised by the Commission.
We also regularly publish position papers on issues that are of importance to us in order to keep EU policy makers informed about the challenges that blind and partially sighted people face and how EU policy can address them. These include equal access to employment, to goods and services, to the information society and to culture (including TV and radio), to books and print media, to telecommunications, to financial services (e.g. banking and insurance), the built environment etc.
We also take an interest in, inter alia, consumer rights, copyright law, welfare rights (e.g. social security, disability benefits, pensions), internal market policy (including e-commerce, public procurement policy), public health and transport policy.Address
