Goals / Remit
EBU works towards an accessible and inclusive society with equal opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to fully participate in all aspects of social, economic, cultural and political life.
Its membership includes the national organisations of the blind and partially sighted in 42 European countries.
EBU’s goals are:
- To enable the blind and partially sighted people of Europe to join together to express their views and aspirations and take collective action, in accordance with democratically adopted decisions, to protect and promote their human, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights; to enhance their self-esteem and enable them to realise their full potential; and to represent their interests.
- To promote the advancement of blind and partially sighted people, including those with additional impairments, with the goal of achieving their equal rights as citizens and full participation in society, if necessary by special legal or administrative measures.
- To provide a European forum for exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of blindness and partial sight.
- To promote the prevention and cure of blindness and partial sight.
- To strive for equal representation and participation of gender and age in its activities.
- To co-operate with and support blind and partially sighted people and their organizations in countries outside Europe.
- To seek to achieve equalisation of opportunities for all women and all men with disabilities, especially men and women who are blind or partially sighted, in all areas of life; to oppose and seek to eliminate discrimination against disabled people in all its forms; and to promote positive action to meet their needs whenever appropriate.Main EU files targeted

Other activities
The European Blind Union is actively working with European Institutions in
all areas of policy development that have an impact on the lives of blind
and partially sighted citizens. We respond to European Commission Green
papers and consultations and take part in stakeholder events organised by
the Commission.
We also regularly publish position papers on issues that are of importance to us in order to keep EU policy makers informed about the challenges that blind and partially sighted people face and how EU policy can
address them. These include equal access to employment, to goods and services, to the information society and to culture (including TV and radio), to books and print media, to telecommunications, to financial services (e.g. banking and insurance), etc.
We also take an interest in, inter alia, consumer rights, copyright law, welfare rights (e.g. social security, disability benefits, pensions), internal market policy (including e-commerce, public procurement policy), public health and transport policy.- Meetings
