    Goals / Remit

RGI Mission: RGI is a unique collaboration of NGOs and TSOs from across Europe engaging in an ‘energy transition ecosystem-of-actors’. We promote fair, transparent, sustainable grid development to enable the growth of renewables to achieve full decarbonisation in line with the Paris Agreement.
RGI has 3 main strategic objectives:
    1) RGI explores and communicates the need for grids for enabling the transition to a fully decarbonised energy system based on renewables.
    2) RGI engages in an ‘energy transition ecosystem-of-actors’ by establishing a strong network of external stakeholders that are part of the energy system of the future.
    3) RGI, within this ‘energy transition ecosystem-of-actors’, takes action to increase the joint understanding about the role and need for sustainable grid infrastructure in a fully decarbonised energy system.
In conclusion, RGI communicates and promotes findings and outcomes of its initiavites to relevant European and national institutions.

    Main EU files targeted

In line with its mission and according to its strategic objectives, RGI contributes actively to climate, energy and environmental legislative processes and to the achievement of their policy objectives.

RGI monitors the Climate Law, Energy Smart Integration, Hydrogen, Offshore and Biodiversity strategies (including foreseen Bird and Habitats directive enforcements), recast of the Renewable Energy, Efficiency and Marine Strategy Framework directives, Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP), Projects of Common Interest in electricity infrastructure and the review of the TEN-E Regulation.

In this context, in the course of the last two years RGI has formally responded to the following EU roadmaps and consultations:

_Consultation on Offshore Renewable Energy strategy (September 2020)
_Consultation on the revision of the Trans-European Network-Energy (TEN-E) Regulation (July 2020)
_Roadmap for the development of the EU strategy for Smart Sector Integration (June 2020)
_Roadmap for the development of the EU Hydrogen strategy (June 2020)
_Consultation on the list of candidate Projects of Common Interest in electricity infrastructure (February 2019)

In addition to that, RGI issued statements and open letters on a number of issues:
_January 2020: in the context of the joint development and launch of the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2020 Scenarios by ENTSO-E and ENSTOS-G, RGI sent an open letter to Commissioner Kadri Simson, Director-General Ditte Juul-Jørgensen and Members of the European Parliament (Committee on Industry, Research and Energy) containing recommendations. https://renewables-grid.eu/publications/press-releases/detail/news/rgi-open-letter-on-the-tyndp-2020-scenarios.html
_February 2020: in the context of the EC consultation on the Climate Law, RGI sent a letter to Commissioner Timmermans and Director-General Petriccione on its vision for a carbon neutral energy system. (document not published online, available upon request).
_April 2020: in the context of the discussion on the EU Stimulus Package, RGI addressed a statement on “A sustainable stimulus plan around the Green Deal in the design of the European Recovery and Reconstruction Package” to the the President of the European Commission Ursula con der Leyen, President of the European David Sassoli, Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, Director-General for Energy Ditte Juul-Jørgensen and the Members of European Parliament. This document states the importance of planning the economic recovery in the frame of the European Green Deal and suggests priorities related to energy developments.
_June 2020: Coinciding with the PAC Scenario launch, RGI has developed a 'Request to Adapt European Energy Planning Scenarios' that has been signed by a broad group of supporters from across society. The Request has been sent and discussed with DG ENER, ENTSO-E and ACER representatives.
_October 2020: in the context of the debate on GHG emission reduction targets, RGI published a position “RGI position on increased EU greenhouse gas emissions target”.

Furthermore, RGI also takes part int the European Commission Interconnection Target group.
All the above-mentioned documents are available online on RGI website unless differently stated. https://renewables-grid.eu/

    Communication activities

The following activities seek to influence different EU legislative proposals and policies:
    PROJECTS:
Paris Agreement Compatible Scenarios for Energy Infrastructure (PAC project)
The PAC project has been established to develop a future energy scenario for Europe which is compatible with the Paris Agreement. This project has enabled an active participation in the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) consultations, and provided content for the upcoming RGI statements and EC consultations such as GHG emission reduction targets, RES and Efficiency targets/directive and past and future gas strategy. Finally, it prompted knowledge exchange on many other relevant topics for the energy system.

Marine Declaration and Coalition for offshore Energy and Nature
In 2019 a diverse range of actors (TSOs, NGOs, civil society, industry) signed the RGI Marine Grid Declaration during the European Commission’s inaugural PCI Energy Days on March 2019. The Marine Declaration lays out principles in the context of grid development in the marine environment, setting a precedent for environmentally-sound and inclusive decision-making in offshore grid development. The principles of the declaration have been then implemented in an Offshore Coalition established by RGI in 2020. The Coalition brings together NGOs, wind industry and transmission system operators across Europe to cooperate on the sustainable deployment of offshore wind, while ensuring alignment with nature protection and healthy marine ecosystems. The Coalition work will support the Maritime Spatial Plans and contribute to the elaboration and implementation of the European climate, energy and environmental objectives.

    EVENTS:
October 2020: “Europe in Transition: How can we accelerate the shift to an integrated, renewables-based energy system?”. This online event focussed on initiatives to maximise RES pentration in the European energy system as we move towards decarbonisation. It also discussed other solutions being developed in all sectors at European level to enable an energy system based on variable RES and sought to identify energy policy priorities for the German and Portuguese EU presidencies.
February 2020: "emPOWER - The Energy Transition Summit" in Brussel was a collaborative conference showcasing innovative solutions to help deliver the European Green Deal and highlight the key policy measures needed to drive the necessary investments.
Cristian Bușoi, Chairman of ITRE committee, European Parliament and Kadri Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy provided opening and closing remarks respectively; Panel contribution from Paula Abreu Marques, Head of Unit for Renewables and CCS policy at DG Energy.

Good Practice of Year Award: Since 2014, the “Good Practice of the Year” awards by RGI upon recommendation of a jury of experts. The award seeks to acknowledge and spread best practices in grid development in the following three categories: 1) Technological Innovation & System Integration 2) Communication & Engagement 3) Environmental Protection. Since 2016 the award ceremony has taken place in the context of the EC Energy Infrastructure Forum in Copenhagen.
