Goals / Remit
The European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) (https://www.efcni.org/) is the first pan-European organisation and interactive network to represent the interests of preterm and newborn infants and their families. The foundation combines the strengths of scientists, healthcare professionals, patients, experts and key stakeholders in order to improve maternal, newborn and child health and thus to ensure the best start in life for children in Europe and beyond.
In particular, EFCNI aims at:
*Ensuring widely accessible pregnancy information and the provision of effective, equitable high-quality care for all women of reproductive age, and particularly for pregnant women
*Continuously improving treatment and care for hospitalized preterm and newborn babies and support for their families
*Improving the long-term health and well-being of preterm and newborn infants, including the provision of medical, psychological, socio-pedagogical and financial support for these children and their families
*Promoting research and the implementation of measures preventing preterm birth and improving the quality of life
Our work is based on the following three pillars:

EFCNI encourages all those involved or interested in the field of pre-conceptional, maternal and newborn health to interact and exchange ideas. It promotes mutual understanding and serves as a platform for the initiation, coordination and integration of all local, national, European- and worldwide activities promoting the best start in life.
EFCNI is particularly keen to establish a link between parents (patients), health professionals, scientists and different stakeholders.
EFCNI offers national patient organisations, European health care societies, researchers and third parties as well as private and institutional sponsors a platform to interact, relevant information and tailored support services.
INFORMAL INTEREST GROUP ON MATERNAL AND NEONATAL HEATH IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Support of the interest group which started its activities beginning of 2011. The interest group works on improvements of maternal and newborn health in the European counties, e.g. equal access to treatment and care, best possible care, patient safety and quality standards in all Member States.
WORLD PREMATURITY DAY, 17 November
EFCNI initiated World Prematurity Day together with its partnering patient organisations back in 2008.
In 2014, this day was celebrated for the fourth time as World Prematurity Day, supported by many international, national, regional and local organisations, societies, healthcare professionals, individuals and private sector companies. Over 60 countries actively participated. About 1.5 billion people worldwide were reached through social media activities (social media platforms, TV/radio, print media) and more than 60 countries contributed with activities or events.
EFCNI initiated and coordinates the European-wide project "Standards of Care for Newborn Health". Professionals, patients, third parties and industry work together ot develop best and minimum standards in the field of newborn health/ prematurity. Long-term aim is an implementation of the standards within Europe to reach harmonized levels of care and the best start in life in every country.
For this project, EFCNI has received the German Award "Land of ideas" in 2017
