    Goals / Remit

    ECIT Foundation (on European Citizens’ Rights, Involvement and Trust) is a public foundation set up to work exclusively on the concepts of European citizenship. was established as a public foundation under Belgian law on 3 June 2015. In the world of European think tanks, it fills a gap being the only one to concentrate solely on European citizenship. ECIT is becoming a resource of know-how, research, and contacts, but also one of support for civil society organisations, academics and policy makers when they work on this theme. So far, the foundation has to its credit a book Piecing together Europe’s citizenship published in English and French, four annual Summer Universities on European Citizenship in Brussels, many conferences, events and smaller projects as well as the Transeuropa Caravans EU project co-organized with European Alternatives and Political Critique.

    This citizens’ think tank brings together civil society activists, academics and policy makers to develop a cle (...)

    Complementary Information

    The people involved in activities covered by the registered are a total of 4 people.
    Of those ten people though, only 2 are paid employees and the rest (2) are students which are carrying out communication activities and coordinating an ECI campaign on full political rights, therefore monitoring several events as regards future of Europe and the report on European Citizenship, which is due this year. Their traineeship is funded by the Erasmus+ programme so they don't subsist any cost for the organization, which does not provide any salary for them.
    This is the reason why our estimated annual cost is so low, compared to people involved in the representation.

    These trainees will only be involved in the organization for a time period of six months. Afterwards, we will update the register accordingly and lower our representation.

    Other financial info

    The Transeuropa caravans project was approved at the end of 2018, but its implementation has largely taken place in 2019.

    The low figure for 2018 reflects the fact that in that year the total budget, not including the Transeuropa Caravans project approved at the very end of the year, was only 13,000 euros and that a high proportion of our work was and still is done on a voluntary basis. Moreover, there were few new initiatives on European citizenship in the Institutions. In order to expand on the substance of the information provided, here were the following activities:

    -meetings and exchanges with the citizenship unit of DG justice;

    -meetings and exchanges with the Article 50 task force on loss of EU citizenship;

    -2 meetings in the European Parliament for the revision of the regulation on citizens’ initiatives where we supported the ECI campaign and Democracy International

    -invitations to Commission officials and MEPs to the summer university on European citizenship held under the patronage of the European Parliament.

    For what regards the estimated annual cost for 2020, the budget is very low, since we only have 2 permanent paid mployees. The rest of people involved in representation activities are trainees receiving an Erasmus scholarship and working on our projects for a time of six months.
