    Goals / Remit

The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacy in the EU (ASOP EU: www.asop.eu) is united by a single objective that by taking concerted voluntary actions, a safer environment for patients who choose to buy their medicines online can be created. ASOP EU comprises a growing number of members and observers including representatives from consumer, healthcare and patient groups, shippers, branded and generic pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacy stakeholders, wholesalers and traders, advertising networks, internet advertising and search companies, internet domain name registrars and registries, payment processors, law enforcement and regulatory bodies. Similar organisations also exist in the United States, in particular the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP: www.safeonlinerx.com) and the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies (CSIP: www.safemedsonline.org).

ASOP EU seeks to be actively involved with all global actors and seeks to cooperate closely with Europol, Interpol, the European Commission (especially DG SANCO and DG MARKT), the EU Observatory, national health regulators, law enforcement and customs authorities to help support the global effort to tackle this significant public health threat.

ASOP EU strongly advocates the use of voluntary industry actions as these actions can help shape a safer marketplace and have the real potential to contribute to tackling illegal activity to complement the range of actions carried out by law enforcement and regulatory bodies.

Each "Member" will be required to contribute 5000 euros if they are a commercial organisation. For non commercial organisations such as Trade Associations or Patient Groups or suchlike then no financial contribution will be required for these "Special Members". However such organisations may wish to support in kind by helping with the organisations administrative responsibilities or taking an active part in the organisations activities. "Observers" may also contribute their support in kind as per a "Member" or Special Member". The membership contributions will go to pay the costs of project work carried out by the Director Mike Isles. The current estimate to cover the costs of Mike Isles in one year are 62,500 euros plus expenses. Other costs will be to maintain the website and pay for the accountancy work. In addition hosting of meetings and other to raise the level of awareness will be carried out. In 2014 the ASOP EU delivered a seminar as part of the Global Forum on Access to safe Medicines held in London in March. The cost to ASOP EU is expected to be neutral due to a delegate registration fee being levied.
